DECEMBER 8
Remembering John

John Lennon photograph/artwork ©©1968/2003 Alan Messer

I had the honour of meeting John and photographing him in 1968.
John arrived to the opening of a restaurant in the Kings Road, accompanied by his date, Yoko Ono. Because he was still married to Cynthia, I didn't photograph John and Yoko together.
A few minutes later John came over to me (realising I was an artist and not a paparazzi) and asked if I would take some pictures of him and his mates. John gave George his hat for a while and they posed with Andrew Oldham. John was in a great mood having fun and singing a little ditty, "I'll apple you, if you'll apple me...". Next day the news broke and John and Yoko were officially born.
The week before that fatal cold December day, when the landscape of we "baby boomers" world changed forever, I had dreamed of seeing John Lennon playing a college gig in Tennessee (under an assumed name) and being fellow Englishmen we had become friends and I had subsequently invited he and his wife to Nashville, where they (in my dream) rented an apartment!
On December 8th, 1980 my dreams were shattered. The innocence of my youth and rock 'n' roll revolution were silenced by the deafening sound of an assassin's gun.
25 years later, we still mourn and miss John.

Play music. Do play not with guns.

work for peace

DECEMBER 3rd was my 38th anniversary as a professional photographer!

38 years ago today, a very excited 16 year old boy started at Dezo Hoffmann's London studio, within days I was elevated from assistant to photographer. I shot my first magazine cover for the Record Mirror a few days later and my second cover was, The Beatles, published 1968.
I am still excited by and intoxicated with photography.
This morning, all these years later I am as excited to work in my own studio as I was that first day.
The adrenaline rush from a 'shoot' is incomparable, except, maybe, for playing live music!
