DECEMBER 8
Remembering John

John Lennon photograph/artwork ©©1968/2003 Alan Messer

I had the honour of meeting John and photographing him in 1968.
John arrived to the opening of a restaurant in the Kings Road, accompanied by his date, Yoko Ono. Because he was still married to Cynthia, I didn't photograph John and Yoko together.
A few minutes later John came over to me (realising I was an artist and not a paparazzi) and asked if I would take some pictures of him and his mates. John gave George his hat for a while and they posed with Andrew Oldham. John was in a great mood having fun and singing a little ditty, "I'll apple you, if you'll apple me...". Next day the news broke and John and Yoko were officially born.
The week before that fatal cold December day, when the landscape of we "baby boomers" world changed forever, I had dreamed of seeing John Lennon playing a college gig in Tennessee (under an assumed name) and being fellow Englishmen we had become friends and I had subsequently invited he and his wife to Nashville, where they (in my dream) rented an apartment!
On December 8th, 1980 my dreams were shattered. The innocence of my youth and rock 'n' roll revolution were silenced by the deafening sound of an assassin's gun.
25 years later, we still mourn and miss John.

Play music. Do play not with guns.

work for peace

DECEMBER 3rd was my 38th anniversary as a professional photographer!

38 years ago today, a very excited 16 year old boy started at Dezo Hoffmann's London studio, within days I was elevated from assistant to photographer. I shot my first magazine cover for the Record Mirror a few days later and my second cover was, The Beatles, published 1968.
I am still excited by and intoxicated with photography.
This morning, all these years later I am as excited to work in my own studio as I was that first day.
The adrenaline rush from a 'shoot' is incomparable, except, maybe, for playing live music!

SEPTEMBER 9
RING OF FIRE, the musical, based on the songs of Johnny Cash, opened in Buffalo, New York, before heading to Broadway in March.

With a remarkable, multi talented cast, innovative sets and choreography we, the audience, were spell bound. "It's not fair on other shows" shouted a voice behind me. I agree!
This musical will appeal to those who already know the extent of the catalogue and to people who may have never heard a Cash song.
OPENS IN NEW YORK, March 2006!

AUGUST 13
LUCINDA WILLIAMS bewitches her audience wherever she goes

The Tivoli Theatre in Chattanooga was treated to a selection of new songs and her now standard ballads and rockers. Lucinda is having fun on the road with her incredible band, before they record later this year.

Judging by the quality of the new songs and the reception from yet another full house,
we're in for another treat!

Steve Winwood played at Stubb's BBQ with his incredible band. For two and a half hours we were treated to his musical genius and energetic entertainment. Winwood really enjoys playing music. He is a true artist, an English gentleman and a fellow Nashvillian. I first photographed Steve with Traffic in 1968.

FEBRUARY 15

Today we mourn the death of Merle Kilgore. The funeral ceremony was held at the Ryman Auditorium, the "mother church of country music". Kilgore was a long time friend of John and June Cash and co wrote Ring Of Fire with June. I never met the man when he wasn't effervescent and full of jokes. If you asked how he was, Merle would reply, "FABULOUS!" Hank Williams Junior said to me yesterday," did we like to hear those stories as much as Merle loved to tell them." Yes we did! All who knew the man will miss him for that and much more. Merle Kilgore was buried close to his dear friends at Hendersonville Funeral Home.
