Roy Acuff was dubbed "The King of Country Music’, and to a certain extent he was. Emerging from the East Tennessee hills during the thirties Acuff had been a pop star of the time and region, with smash hits: ‘Great Speckled Bird’ and 'Wabash Cannonball', travelling busily up and down the country with his band “The Smokey Mountain Boys’. Dobro player Bashful Brother Oswald (Pete Kirby) told me that Acuff, had built up a great collection of acoustic string instruments by having his band members buy up anything that was of interest.
These instruments were exhibited at The Roy Acuff Museum at ‘OpryLand’ theme park
Sadly this is now the Opry Mills shopping mall
I took this picture at
‘The Grand Ole Opry’ on my first visit to Nashville.
